38. World Federation of the Sporting Goods
Industry: Code of Conduct Guiding
Principles, 2000

Commentary: Established in 1978, the World Federation of the Sporting Goods
Industry (WFSGI, www.wfsgi.org) consists of large international sports companies,
smaller national companies and national federations from over 50 States. The WFSGI
Committee on Ethics and Fair Trade first developed this Model Code in 1997 follow-
ing consultation with constituent federations, other members, international organisa-
tions and NGOs. This version of the Code, endorsed by the WFSGI General
Assembly in 2000, serves as a model for companies to develop individual codes and
ensure `that their operations satisfy the highest ethical standards in the global market-
place'. Additional instruments include WFSGI (1995), `Code of Best Practice concern-
ing Child Labour', Verbier and WFSGI/International Olympic Committee (IOC)
(2004), `Code of Conduct'. See further, Fédération Internationale de Football
Association/International Confederation of Free Trade Unions/International
Federation of Commercial, Clerical, Professional and Technical Employees/
International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers Federation (1996), `Code of
Labour Practice'. Compare also the International Council of Toy Industries (1995,
revised 2001), `Code of Business Practices', New York (www.toy-icti.org/
info/code.htm) with the Toy Industry of Europe (1997), `Code of Business Practices',
Brussels (www.tietoyorg).

Preamble
