43. Reverend Sullivan: the Global Sullivan
Principles of Social Responsibility, 1997

Commentary: Reverend Leon H. Sullivan first formulated the Sullivan Statement
of Principles for US Corporations Operating in South Africa during 1977 to counter
racial discrimination in the workplace under South African apartheid. They called
for corporate divestment with any entity engaged in discriminatory practices and
were subsequently amplified on four occasions: see 24 ILM 1486 (1985). For compa-
rable intergovernmental codes, see the Code of Conduct concerning the
Employment Practices of Canadian Companies Operating in South Africa 24 ILM
1464 (1985); the European Community Code of Conduct for Enterprises having
Affiliates, Subsidiaries or Agencies in South Africa (1977) 9 EC Bulletin 2.2.4.
Following the abolition of apartheid, Reverend Sullivan announced the Global
Sullivan Principles as guidelines for ethical business practices within developing
countries: www.globalsullivanprinciples.org. Formulated with input from several
corporations and business associations, corporate endorsers commit to imple-
menting appropriate internal policies and procedures, undertaking effective training,
completing publicly available annual reports and sharing experiences at annual meet-

As a company which endorses the Global Sullivan Principles we will respect the law, and
as a responsible member of society we will apply these Principles with integrity consistent
with the legitimate role of business. We will develop and implement company policies,
procedures, training and internal reporting structures to ensure commitment to these
