82. International Gas Union: Guiding Principles
for Sustainable Development, 2003

Commentary: Founded in 1931, the International Gas Union (IGU, www.igu.org)
is a global non-profit organisation registered in Switzerland with a secretariat located
in Denmark. The IGU's objective is to promote technical and economic progress
within the gas industry and its membership consists of associations and entities from
67 States. The IGU formulates an action programme at World Gas conferences held
every three years for subsequent implementation by working committees. See also

The underlying tenet of the IGU Guiding Principles for Sustainable Development is that the
gas industry integrates economic, environmental and social factors in all its business prac-
tices. The gas industry further recognises that continuous improvement of corporate perfor-
mance towards sustainable development is critical for successful business.
The gas industry's corporate performance for Sustainable Development is guided by the
following declarations:

(i) The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948.
(ii) The ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Works, 1998.
(iii) The Rio Declaration on Sustainable Development and its Agenda for the 21st century,
1992.
