Organising a volume among four co-editors who live and work in four
different countries is not a simple task. We wish to thank The Foundation
Maison des Sciences de l'Homme, in Paris, for generously funding the
collaborative project, Globalisation and Public Health in Developing
Countries, that ultimately produced this book. We are extremely grateful to
Jean-Luc Racine, director of the International Programme for Advanced
Studies at the Foundation, for enthusiastically encouraging and support-
ing our efforts throughout the entire process, and to Josiane Ochoa for the
administrative support she provided. As residents in Paris, in addition to
the generous financial support we received from the Foundation, we were
fortunate to be provided office space at the Columbia University Institute
for Scholars Reid Hall and accommodation at Maison Suger. We are
grateful to Danielle Haase-Dubosc, director of Columbia's Institute for
Scholars, as well as to Mihaela Bacou, Naby Avcioglu and the rest of the
staff at Reid Hall (as well as the other scholars in residence) for limitless
support and collegiality they extended to us during the AprilJune 2009
period. We also wish to thank the many people who attended and par-
ticipated in the workshop that we organised on Globalisation and Public
Health in Developing Countries. This workshop, which took place at
Reid Hall in June 2009, marked an important milestone in the subsequent
