Part I of this book highlighted the importance of the global conventions and the way in which they can be used to establish an effective legal framework to combat piracy and other maritime crimes. Part II addressed the issues and problems faced by ASEAN and ASEAN member states in establishing such a legal framework, including the challenges faced by ASEAN member states in ratifying and implementing the global conventions, and the challenges faced by ASEAN in their general approach to maritime security. In the concluding chapter, key recommendations on how ASEAN member states and ASEAN can establish an effective legal framework to combat piracy and other maritime crimes will be set out.
