Preface
This book is the outcome of a reflection process that brought most of
our contributors together at the Maastricht Centre for European Law on
October 10­11, 2011 for a conference entitled `Judicial Activism at the
European Court of Justice: Causes, Responses and Solutions'. This event
and the resulting publication have received the support of Maastricht
Faculty of Law, the European Union Democracy Observatory and the
Limburg University Fund/SWOL. We are most grateful to the partici-
pants, speakers and authors for thought-provoking academic exchanges
as well as to the organizations that have provided their administrative and
financial assistance to this initiative thereby making its realization possi-
ble. This book reflects developments up to mid-2012.
