Section Title: The EU promotion of social protection in the world
Author(s): Olivier, Marius
Number of pages: 17
Abstract/Description:
This chapter essentially focuses on the role of the EU in the promotion of social security in the developing world, from a generic perspective, with some application to the sub-Saharan context. The first section reflects on the underlying legal and policy framework, informed largely by EU and Member States’ competencies in the area of development cooperation and with a focus on social protection. The second section contains a high-level critical discussion of salient issues: the overall legal, policy and institutional framework; current aid modalities; and the envisaged redirection/reform of support of social protection in the developing world, at least from the perspective of the EU itself (primarily via the European Commission).
