Alan Boyle is Professor of Public International Law at the University of
Edinburgh School of Law. He teaches international law, international
environmental law and law of the sea. His publications include, among
others, International Law and the Environment (with Patricia Birnie and
Catherine Redgwell) (Oxford University Press, 2009) and The Making of
International Law (with Christine Chinkin) (Oxford University Press,
2007). He practises international law from Essex Court Chambers,
London, in recent or current cases including Pulp Mills on the River
Uruguay (International Court of Justice), Aerial Spraying (International
Court of Justice), Bay of Bengal Maritime Boundaries (International
Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and Permanent Court of Arbitration),
Japanese Whaling (International Court of Justice), Chagos Islands
(Permanent Court of Arbitration) and South China Sea Case (Permanent
Court of Arbitration).
Hans Christian Bugge is Professor Emeritus of Environmental Law at
the Department of Public and International Law, University of Oslo. He
holds a doctorate in regional planning from the Université de Paris II and
is Juris Doctor from the University of Oslo on a thesis on responsibility
for pollution in Norwegian law. In 1998 he was appointed Professor of
Environmental Law. Prior to becoming an academic lawyer in 1991, he
held various senior positions including Director-General of Pollution
Control Authority and Director-General of the Department for Urban and
Regional Planning, Norway's Ministry of the Environment (1972­1982);
Secretary General of Redd Barna running humanitarian and development
projects in Asia, Africa and Central America (1982­1991); ...
