This book originates from the first phase of a seven-year research pro-
gramme (20102017) on Global Governance and Democratic Government,
funded by the Special Research Fund (BOF) at the University of Leuven
(KU Leuven). This programme, hosted by the Leuven Centre for Global
Governance Studies (GGS) and conducted jointly by GGS and the Centre
for Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy of KU Leuven aims to contrib-
ute to the ongoing debate about the nature of global governance and its
democratic legitimacy implications.
A book is always a collective undertaking, but in this case it is more
than that: it is the product of an ongoing process of common discussion
and reflection of a whole group of researchers. We received feedback and
support from a whole series of people. First, we owe gratitude to Dr Simon
Schunz and Nicolas Hachez. Both provided invaluable input at various
stages of the project, which challenged and strengthened the structure
and the arguments of all the chapters. We would also like to thank all col-
leagues of KU Leuven and the many guests who attended the seminars
held at GGS, where we were able to present draft chapters of this book.
We are also grateful to have benefited from the helpful insights of Prof. Dr
Thomas Weiss, who was a visiting professor at GGS in the framework of
our research programme.
We are also very appreciative of the comments we received at various
workshops from Prof. Dr Jan Aart Scholte and Prof. ...
