Abstract/Description:
As biofuels are made from a renewable natural resource (biomass), this could offer options for climate change mitigation, energy security and rural development. However, increased biofuel production involves serious environmental and social challenges. No international legal framework directly and comprehensively addressing the production of biofuels and their environmental and socio-economic impacts currently exists. Although some MEAs are relevant to aspects of biofuel production and sustainability, international biofuel governance is a mixture of national and supranational hard law and international soft law measures. The chapter advances the argument that the patchwork nature of current approaches in respect of biofuels risks losing the holistic view essential to ensure their sustainability. It concludes by highlighting research questions with regard to a coordinated normative approach in respect of biofuels and their associated negative impacts that appears needed at the international level.
