Abstract/Description:

Public policies around the world are stimulating innovation and private investment in clean technologies. The biofuels sector provides a good case study of this trend. Over 60 countries around the world have established mandates or targets for the use of renewable fuels in their conventional fuel pool. In addition to opening the marketplace with these renewable fuels requirements and stimulating the demand, most countries have also implemented programs incentivizing the construction of biofuels facilities domestically in order to stimulate production. Canadian public policies and programs have enabled this country to establish itself as a global leader in biofuels. As a result of government mandates, such as the Renewable Fuels Standards, and funding and incentives programs such as the ecoENERGY for Biofuels Program, Canada’s renewable fuels industry is producing almost 1.98 billion litres of ethanol and approximately 400 million litres of biodiesel annually. According to the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association, Canada’s renewable fuels industry has delivered more than 14 000 direct and indirect jobs and $5 billion in economic activity since 2007.
