Acknowledgements
The idea for this book arose at one of the many privacy and data
protection-related conferences in Europe, where the debate reflected
several issues relating to privacy and data protection as fundamental
rights but it did not encompass a discussion on the role of courts in
shaping them. This book aims to fill this gap. However, our work could
have not been completed without the help of many who either contrib-
uted actively to the preparation of the book or supported indirectly but
not less heartedly our endeavours.
Therefore, we would like to thank all the contributors to this edited
volume for their smooth collaboration and willingness to revise their
chapters several times on the basis of our comments and suggestions as
well as for their patience for what turned out to be a rather long editing
process. Moreover, we would like to express our gratitude to Edward
Elgar Publishing, notably Ben Booth, Iram Satti, Ellen Pearce, Sue Sharp
and their colleagues who worked diligently for the publication of the
book; Anjum Shabbir, who was entrusted with the language review of the
entire manuscript, for her efficiency, enthusiasm and flexibility; Bruno de
Witte for his participation in the workshop which preceded the publica-
tion of the book and for his encouragement throughout the manuscript's
preparation; and Ellen Vos. A warm word of gratitude goes of course to
our families and friends for their unconditional support, love and
understanding.
