Abstract/Description:
In this chapter we examine the socio-legal status of older persons in the Council of Europe Member States, as reported by the States themselves. This examination is made possible by the European Social Charter (Revised) (ESC) and by the European Committee of Social Rights, which supervises the reports of the States’ compliance with the Charter. The Committee is appointed to examine application of the ESC and appraises the way in which the States operate. The same Committee also examines complaints lodged against those States by non-governmental organizations (NGOs). This chapter presents an innovative quantitative empirical analysis of the Committee’s decisions regarding older persons and provides some insights into ageism and the social construction of older persons under the ESC.
