1. INTRODUCTION As evidenced by the flow of information conveyed in the media as well as by academic literature, the interplay between human rights and investment is a key issue in today's world. This interplay has various and intertwined dimensions that this Research Handbook aims at disentangling and analysing. From a societal point of view, this interplay boils down to the impact of investment operations, conducted notably by multinational corporations (MNCs), on human rights, in particular social, economic and cultural rights. From a legal point of view, it relates to the way international law addresses the above-mentioned societal phenomenon as well as to the relationship between human rights (law) and international economic law regimes, mainly international investment law. To make sense of these various dimensions of the interplay between human rights and investment, it is necessary to shed light on their societal and legal roots and therefore to focus on the relevant facets of globalisation as well as on the pertinent features of international law.
2. HUMAN RIGHTS AND INVESTMENT IN A GLOBALISED WORLD Globalisation is a complex and disputed notion.
