Abstract/Description:

This chapter applies a categorical approach to studying citizenship and belonging. The focus in this chapter is on the category of new citizens who are all naturalised British citizens. They are a heterogeneous group who come from different national origins, immigration and asylum pathways and who vary significantly in race, class and age. This chapter asks what we can learn about the experience of becoming a new citizen from the new citizens themselves. It will consider some of the differences between new citizens and the diverse range of their experiences of migration and settlement.
