Book Title: Comparative Government
Editor(s): Popović, Dragoljub
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
Section: Chapter 4
Section Title: Presidential government
Number of pages: 34
Abstract/Description:
The chapter discusses the presidential form of government. It begins with the emergence of that type of government in the United States of America in its federal Constitution of 1787 but also explores the main American constitutional developments. Constitutional practice has been taken into account, especially through the analysis of the Supreme Court’s decisions. Each of the three branches of national government in the USA is treated separately, which is followed by a review of checks and balances. Efforts to transplant the pattern of presidential government outside of the USA have also been discussed. At the end of the chapter the author presents his view on the basic elements of an overall definition of the presidential form of government.
