Section Title: Directorial government
Number of pages: 13
Abstract/Description:
The directorial form of government is nowadays a specific system existing in Switzerland. It nevertheless finds its historical roots in France at the time of the great revolution. The emergence and maintaining of this specific form of government is due to the historical evolution of Switzerland, as well as to the mentality of the Swiss people. It relies on the referendum as a form of direct democracy in terms of decision making, and on compromise as the main political goal and virtue. The author analyses the constitutional system of Switzerland and the way in which it has been functioning. There have been efforts to transplant this form of government to other countries, but for various reasons they have all turned out to be unsuccessful.
