Abstract/Description:

Both as a candidate and as president, Donald Trump has repeated the slogan “America First.” Despite this, there were many foreigners in and around the Trump campaign. The Trump campaign in 2016 used a company called Cambridge Analytica to help target online ads to voters. Cambridge Analytica’s employees were primarily non-U.S. citizens, who are legally prohibited from being given decision-making powers for American political campaigns. What’s unclear from the outside is whether Cambridge Analytica abided by American campaign finance law. Another company that pitched work to the Trump campaign was an Israeli company called Psy-Group. This firm could have run into similar problems. And then there were the actions of the Russians, who were quite aggressive in interfering in the 2016 election. This chapter looks at the actions of two Russians, Mariia Butina and her boss Alexander Torshin, who appear to have targeted the National Rifle Association to break into Republican political circles.
