Abstract/Description:
This chapter provides commentary on art. 6 of the CRC on the child’s right to life, survival and development. Building in particular on case law of the Inter-American and the European Court of Human Rights, the chapter explores states’ negative and positive obligations to respect, protect and fulfil this right. Key issues discussed include the multilayered definition of the various aspects of art. 6, a human rights-based approach to life, survival and development, the beginning of childhood and the responsibility of private actors.
