Abstract/Description:

This chapter assesses whether values of liberal equality will be challenged post-Brexit by examining how a withdrawal from the EU will impact the regulation of healthcare human resources and patient mobility. The NHS was founded on ideas of equality in access to care; however, waves of reform have allowed other conceptions of justice to penetrate the system, maintaining that the provision of services be based on needs rather than on vulnerable patients’ ability to pay. The change in the economic and political conjecture of the UK in the wake of Brexit, along with the mounting pressure currently affecting healthcare resources, may nevertheless unprecedentedly jeopardise these foundations.
