Book Title: Generic Top-Level Domains
Editor(s): Mahler, Tobias
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
Section: Chapter 1
Section Title: Introduction
Number of pages: 14
Abstract/Description:
Chapter 1 introduces the book’s main perspectives and issues. This book examines the regulatory framework for introducing and managing generic Top-Level Domains (TLDs) on the Internet. It focusses especially on the extension of the domain namespace, and especially, the introduction of ‘new’ generic TLDs (gTLDs) since 2012. The regulatory framework for this is primarily contained in a text ICANN called the ‘gTLD Applicant Guidebook’ (AGB). A key argument is that these rules pertain to an emerging class of legal sources, which can be referred to as transnational private regulation. This book contributes to three distinct academic discourses – Internet governance, domain name law and transnational private regulation.
