Abstract/Description:
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a ten-state member organization focused on deepening and strengthening economic integration and trade links, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017. ASEAN has successfully promoted a series of trade agreements with members and key economies in the region. However, the percentage of intra-ASEAN trade has remained stubbornly stagnant despite concerted efforts to encourage tighter supply chains and greater economic integration. Sorting out this paradox requires a deep understanding of how ASEAN has built its integration model. This chapter examines the ASEAN integration model while looking forward to forecast whether ASEAN will reach its full potential or deliver sub-optimal results.
