Abstract/Description:

Innovation has become a central theme in the academy’s strategic planning as universities seek to transform themselves into “innovation ecosystems” equipped to provide an ever widening variety of innovative, entrepreneurial, and commercialization related programs. The rush to become an innovative university, coupled with fluid and changing understandings of what it means to be an innovative university, has resulted in a broad diversity of innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives both within and across university campuses. The academy’s interest in such initiatives continues to grow despite the dearth of information about their performance and impact. This Chapter examines the evolving role of university technology transfer offices amidst the proliferation of innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives in US research universities. It considers the implications of this proliferation of initiatives—taken in combination with the government focus on the return on investment from federal funding—for technology transfer offices and their traditional technology transfer functions.
