Expressions of interest sought for positions

The Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII - http://www.austlii.edu.au/) is employing new staff members for 2005. We encourage people who are suitably qualified for and interested in the positions described below to apply. Applicants may apply for more than one position.

The positions will be located primarily at AustLII's offices at the Markets Campus of the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), in the Faculty of Law. AustLII is a joint facility of the Faculties of Law at UTS and the University of New South Wales (UNSW). AustLII staff are employed as employees of UTS or UNSW. The positions are offered as full time positions but opportunities are available to accommodate the completion of tertiary studies or, in appropriate cases, on a part-time basis.

AustLII is looking for staff to fill some or all of the following positions:

  1. Systems Developer
  2. Project Officer - Database Development
  3. Training and External Relations Officer

(1) Systems Developer

This position is part of the team responsible for the database and systems development of AustLII and WorldLII, including over 200 large scale databases of legal materials and the software and systems necessary to maintain them and provide very high levels of public access. Members of the team each have responsibility for management and development of sets of databases, and (depending on qualifications and experience) on the development of new software for text processing.

Most of the AustLII / WorldLII software has been developed in-house including search engine, hypertext mark-up, cataloguing and web spider software. The principal responsibility of this position is to further develop and maintain all of the software and systems necessary for the operation of AustLII/WorldLII. Some maintaining of databases by the use of standards and automated tools is also required.

Qualifications: Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science (or equivalent degree) are essential. Tertiary qualifications in law are highly desirable. Applicants require a sound knowledge of internet and related protocols. A sound knowledge of, and demonstrated experience in the use of Unix, HTML, XML, C and Perl is essential. Knowledge of other text processing languages and tools is highly desirable. Knowledge of and experience in the development of large scale publishing systems on the Internet is highly desirable. Good communication skills are highly desirable.

(2) Project Officer - Database development

AustLII/WorldLII receives data feeds in a variety of formats from our data providers. The main responsibility of this position is to prepare and process data using standard conversion tools. This position would also involve running existing processing scripts to convert 'standardised' data for online publication as well as customising them for different data formats. This position works with other members of the database team and would be involved in processing primary materials (case law and legislation) and secondary materials (eg law journals). Some editorial work may need to be performed especially in processing secondary materials.

Qualifications: Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science (or equivalent degree) are essential, but applicants who are near to completion of qualifications will be considered. A background in law is desirable. A sound knowledge of, and experience in the use of HTML and internet protocols is essential. Knowledge of Unix, Perl, and any text management tools is highly desirable. Good communications skills are highly desirable.

(3) Training and External Relations Officer

The Training and External Relations Officer will take a leading role in the development and delivery of AustLII's national training programme in Internet legal research. The main target audience for the program will be the legal profession and the justice sector, but it will also service the business community and those providing legal research training in other institutions ('train the trainer'). The Training and External Relations Officer will also provide assistance in training at UNSW and UTS where needed. This position will involve extensive travel within Australia to run training courses in other capital cities, and applicants must also be willing to provide training on Saturdays where necessary.

This position will also assist in maintaining and developing AustLII's relationships with its key stakeholders, including its data sources and funding sources, and its users. It will involve implementing AustLII's fund raising strategies, including raising funding from AustLII's users and stakeholders (such as business organisations and the legal profession, courts and tribunals, government agencies, and philanthropic organisations) and strategic partnerships with the objective of diversifying AustLII's funding base. This position will assist in organising AustLII's fund raising events, usually including an annual Conference such as the "Law via the Internet" Conference (which AustLII will co-host with PacLII in 2005).

Qualifications: Qualifications in law or another appropriate discipline are required. Applicants require a sound knowledge of the legal profession, legal publishing, and information technology. Good communications skills, and experience in training are essential. Experience in fund raising (including writing funding applications) and event management is highly desirable. Short-listed applicants may be required to teach a demonstration class on Internet legal research.
