We provide critical national research infrastructure, which provides the basis for all research that deals directly or indirectly with Australian law.
We serve over 250 million page access requests per year (nearly 700,000 per day) from over 6.1 million distinct hosts, providing access to nearly 1,000 databases of information.
We ensure that the legal system operates effectively and efficiently, support access to justice and help to enable the rule of law for Australia and internationally. Our mission is to provide comprehensive free access to the law for all Australians.
'Free access to law' means that the AustLII service is free to use for all those who can access the internet. However, this service is not free to build, maintain and provide.
In order to operate the comprehensive professional service that we aim to do and that our many and various users expect, we require income to pay our staff, and to constantly maintain and update the computing hardware and facilities that deliver the service.
We do not seek user access subscriptions or advertising because they are inconsistent with our free access policies and charitable status. We ask all who use AustLII to make an annual contribution that reflects the value of AustLII to them and to the Australian community.
